What are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is a titanium screw that can replace the root of a tooth when it fails. Just like the root of a tooth, it is placed into the jaw bone and artificial/false teeth can be made on top of the implant to restore unsightly gaps and help improve the ability to eat, chew and speak.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

  1. Dental implants can replace a missing tooth or teeth without affecting the adjacent area.

  2. The process is highly predictable, with better long term success rates compared to traditional bridges and dentures.

  3. Dental implants can restore the full functionality of the jaw and improve chewing.

  4. Dental implants can improve social confidence.

  5. Loose dentures are no longer a problem.

  6. We only use world-class quality dental implant components – we refuse to use cheap imitations.

  7. Surgery will be performed in our relaxing practice environment and our comfortable treatment rooms.

  8. For nervous patients – treatment is available under sedation at our practice.

Treatment Options

Treatment options will be discussed in your consultation but may include;

  • Single Tooth Replacement
Replace a single missing or poor-quality tooth.

  • Multiple Tooth Replacement
Usually involves the placement of two or more implants, used to support a fixed bridge.

  • Full Arch Implants
    An alternative to a denture.

  • Overdenture
    Securing dentures using Implants.

  • Teeth in a Day
Ideal for people with damaged or missing teeth looking to restore a healthy smile and the procedure can be completed in just one day. king to restore a healthy smile and the procedure can be completed in just one day.

  • Wisdom Tooth Removal
Many people deal with impacted wisdom teeth or wisdom teeth pain – it may be necessary to remove the wisdom teeth in order to stop the pain or prevent further problems occurring.

  • Sinus Grafting
This procedure is suggested when there is not enough bone height in the upper jaw, or the sinuses are too close to the jaw, for dental implants to be placed.

  • Socket Grafting
When a tooth is removed, the “hole” that remains is referred to as a socket. In order to preserve a greater bone volume for possible future implant options, a socket grafting is performed. Bovine bone particles are placed in the socket and left to heal for 6 months. Over this time the particles and the natural bone integrate together.

  • Guided Surgery
Using computer software and radiographic stents in order to carefully prepare for implant surgery. One of the main advantages of this is usually a shorter surgery time.

  • Sedation
Dr Mallorie has been trained in the use of sedation techniques at the prestigious Kings College, London. Sedation will enable a nervous patient to cope with any of the treatment/surgery necessary.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM GLENHAVEN?

Consultation
The first visit would be with Dr Mallorie for an examination and discussion about how implants could help you.

Investigations/Planning
The next stage would be to obtain an accurate 3-Dimensional scan of the bone in the area of interest to help Dr Mallorie plan your implant placement. Following this scan, you would receive a comprehensive treatment plan including costs for your treatment.

Surgery to place the implant(s)
The surgical placement of dental implants is a relatively straightforward minor surgical procedure.

Restoration of the implant(s)
After a period of 3 to 6 months of healing, during which time your bone heals onto the titanium implant surface, you would then be ready for the final teeth to be made and attached to the implants.

WHY GLENHAVEN?

Glenhaven can now offer some of the best treatment options for your implants in a comfortable environment that our patients are used to. Dr Mallorie says “Dental implants are an investment in yourself for the future enjoyment of food and social interaction. This is not an area to compromise on quality.”

Dr Mallorie has trained extensively in the field of dental implants for the past 11 years in centres of excellence all around the World from the USA, Australia to across Europe in order to provide our patients with predictable results. He has been placing dental implants over this time and now uses arguably the best implant system in the World which is a Swiss company called Straumann. With this system he has success rates of 98.8 per cent, so you can rest assured you are making a sound investment in your dental health.

Cheaper clinicians out there may be using cheaper implant systems with poor research behind them and they themselves may not have received the thorough training required to place implants predictably and safely. The best dental implants are non-toxic, safe and biocompatible with your mouth.

WHAT DOES IT COST?

For an implant consultation at Glenhaven, with the Award Winning dental surgeon, Dr Craig Mallorie will cost £80. Within this appointment, Dr Mallorie will discuss in-depth, your various options for Implants and complete a full examination to see if you are suitable.

Please see our Treatment Costs for more information. 0% finance plans for 12 months are available and there are longer plans available at 9.9%. Please enquire at the practice or contact us for more information.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

There are generally 3 stages of implant treatment:

1. Implant placement – The dentist places the implant into the jaw with some surgical treatment
2. Healing – Normally, the implant needs some time to “integrate” with the jaw i.e. time for the bone to grow around the implant and hold it firmly in place
3. Replacing the missing tooth with a false tooth – A false tooth is made to fit on top of the implant to restore the gap. The false tooth (or teeth) is normally a dental crown, a bridge, or a denture

As well as making sure you feel as comfortable and relaxed as possible, your dentist will use a local anaesthetic which will help eradicate pain during treatment. Sedation can also be used to help relax patients feeling a little nervous about the treatment.

Implants are considered as a safe, clinically proven and well-established technology. They have been around for more than 30 years and were first pioneered by Professor Bränemark in Sweden in 1960’s. Implants have an integration success rate of 98% and with the Dr Mallorie using the Swiss company Straumann to source his implants, he maintains a 98.8% success rate.

Just like your natural teeth, implants can last for many years if you take good care of them. This can be achieved with good brushing habits, leading a healthy lifestyle and seeing your dentist regularly for check-ups and maintenance appointments. If treated well and maintained properly, the implants will last a considerable number of years, if not a lifetime.

There is no upper age limit for dental implants and are considered as a successful anchorage for dentures. The increased stabilisation and retention of the denture can greatly increase your confidence, chewing efficiency and most importantly your quality of life. The candidates’ suitability will depend on the quality of their bone structure in their jaw and is assessed on a case by case basis.

There is no defined time limit as to how long the treatment will take. Patients must have an initial consultation to see if they are suitable and discuss treatment options, then have an accurate scan of the bone area, plan the surgery and recovery time and then after sufficient recovery time plan to fit the final teeth to the implants.

Dental implants can be used to replace anywhere from a single tooth to a full set of 14 teeth. Classically to replace a full set of missing teeth it is possible to attach a fixed bridge of 12 teeth onto 4 dental implants placed evenly in the jaw via a process called “All-on-4”. This can be a life-changing transformation for patients improving both chewing function and social confidence.

Yes, there is no limit to the number of teeth replaced with implants. This can range from one single tooth to a complete set of teeth.

After a period of 3 to 6 months of healing, during which time your bone heals onto the titanium implant surface, you would then be ready for moulds to be taken of your mouth to enable the final teeth to be made and attached to the implants
